OOP - AGAINST THE ODDS…
Determined farmer defeats doubt, realizes dream
ANDREWS, Texas – R.L. “Oop” Shrauner was proud of the documents spread out on his dining table, but they still seemed a little alien to him. “It’ was the funnest venture I ever did,” he said. “It was a hoot.” His “venture” was, after a lifetime of illiteracy, enrolling in college in his mid- 50s and excelling against staggering odds. “Getting me to learn was like sticking a worm in a hole it didn’t want to go in,” he said. But he did it, and graduated with a 3.4 grade point average. “I did it for myself,” he said; his massive arms and torso cloaked in a crisp white shirt and bib overalls. It erased decades of low self-esteem and proved to him that most of what he grew up thinking about himself was wrong, that being unable to read and write was the worst stigma imaginable. “I thought I was the trash of the earth,” he stated. College taught him that not learning to read and write as a child was a measure of his circumstances, not his intellect. Shrauner’s childhood was given to long days of hard labor and infrequent brushes with the classroom. By the time he was 10 he was operating a bulldozer 10 and 11 hours a day. The skills he learned from his father, and the strength he acquired from his labors, served him well.
His life changed with the birth of his daughter, a child that the doctor was convinced his wife Patsy would not carry to term. When she was born healthy, Shrauner sat under a tree and cried and found
God. “That totally changed my life,” he said. — Houston Chronicle Today, he is a born again, spirit-filled, successful farmer, and heavy equipment mechanic. His testimony is “unusual” to say the least. His teaching is filled with real life examples of how God will lead people by the power of the Holy Spirit to provide above and beyond what they can ask or think.
“The Lord uses me to lift people to higher places than they think are possible. I like to teach down-and-out people that they have value, and that with God’s help they can be somebody.”
